I've received the new unit today and it is still doing the same thing, from the beginning I had a feeling the the unit wasn't defective.

I am currently using my PreSonus AudioBox iTwo (which I only stopped using as I wanted 4 inputs which the Behringer offers) and the PreSonus works perfectly in every respect so I'm confident that the problem lies with Behringer, not my setup.
